Peace in our time?

The quote mentioned at Legal Insurrection below has GOT to be one of the most historically tone deaf quotes from a man who is supposed to be one of the best orators alive. No one who is at all familiar with the beginnings of the Second World War can forget the image of Neville Chamberlain standing outside 10 Downing Street proclaiming “Peace for our time.”

Adopting the language of appeasement, even unconsciously, reveals much about the future we will have if we continue down the path Obama would lead us. Like Neville Chamberlain, Barack Obama may be well intentioned but good intentions are not enough. My own faith talks about not just correct worship (orthodoxia) but correct actions (orthopraxia), because you cannot have one without the other. These good intentions are constantly belied by the paternalism, corruption and cronyism that have constantly constantly plagued the first term of the Obama administration.

We can only hope for better in the second. But I’m not holding my breath.

And we must be a source of hope to the poor, the sick, the marginalized, the victims of prejudice – not out of mere charity, but because peace in our time requires the constant advance of those principles that our common creed describes: tolerance and opportunity; human dignity and justice.
